Position Description Benefits Supplemental Questions Anne Arundel County Government is now accepting applications to fill full-time, represented, safety sensitive Detention Officer positions at one of two Detention Facilities within the County. Detention Officers with Anne Arundel County are career minded individuals who are part of a team of dedicated public safety officers. They take great pride in their community service by ensuring the safety and security of inmates and therefore, the citizens of this county. This is responsible work in adult corrections in maintaining order and supervising inmates in the County Detention Center. Effective January 1, xxxx, the Detention Officer minimum salary will increase to $40,376. NOTE: THIS IS A SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION AND EMPLOYEES IN THIS POSITION ARE SUBJECT TO CONTROLLED DANGEROUS SUBSTANCE (CDS) AND ALCOHOL TESTING. NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK This work involves responsibility for performing, under general supervision, duties related to the direct and indirect supervision of inmates, transportation of inmates, prompt action in responding to emergencies and maintaining order and cleanliness of the facility. Duties may include shift work, outdoor work, driving vehicles, and exposure to dangerous situations in and out of the facility. This work requires an understanding of adult correctional work and departmental rules and regulations. Employees in this classification are designated essential employees, and must report to work under all weather conditions. Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are to establish a common set of minimum qualifications and are not intended to include all of the essential job functions.) Standing, sitting, walking for prolonged periods of time. Responding to highly stressful, hostile, and dangerous situations, quickly addressing the situation, and taking action to reduce the danger and hostility. Specific situations include but are not limited to fire suppression, bomb threats, hazardous chemical spills, power outages, and inmate disturbances. Subduing inmates engaged in physical altercations, controlling uncooperative individuals both orally and, when necessary, through physical restraint. Responding to medical emergencies pending the arrival of medical personnel; securing the scene; and performing first aid. Safe operation of a motor vehicle during day and night time hours and in all types of weather for the purpose of transporting inmates to court, medical appointments, hospitals, and work sites. Work requires overtime, shift work, and standby, when necessary. Qualify, after training, with firearms (handgun and shotgun). Qualify, after training, in self-defense skills. Completion of written reports. Use of radio to communicate. Overt, as well as, casual observation of people, places and things during day and night and in all types of weather while working a post in the facility, performing inmate supervision at an off-site location or in a vehicle while performing inmate transportation duties. Hear and recognize sounds and voices associated with emergency situations and take proper measures to respond and react to audio information. Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to learn and apply corrections' principles, practices, methods, techniques and equipment in daily operational situations. Ability and willingness to perform work under adverse and, at times, dangerous conditions, in unpleasant environments, during day and night hours, and for extended periods of time. Ability to operate motor vehicles and, after training, issued equipment. Ability to read, interpret, and enforce rules, regulations, written and/or oral instructions or orders. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with superiors, other employees, public and inmates. Ability to prepare standard reports. Ability to meet established physical and age requirements. Ability to meet the selection standards promulgated by the County and the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. Ability to successfully complete the Entry Level Training Program conducted by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Academy. Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school; a minimum age of 18 at the time of appointment; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license. Supplemental Qualifications: SELECTION PROCEDURES: After you complete the application, the following procedures are generally followed: 1. YOU WILL RECEIVE an E-MAIL providing direction on self-scheduling your written examination date soon after the position announcement closes. This position announcement will close on October 27, xxxx at 11:59 pm. Please be sure to check your e-mails regularly for notice to schedule your written exam date. Please also make sure that e-mail from Anne Arundel County goes to your inbox and not into your spam folder. 2. Your written exam will be scored on sight and an unofficial score will be given. If it is determined that you have been successful with the written exam, you will complete additional paperwork and meet with a background investigator. 3. Your official written exam score and additional information you provide will be evaluated by the Detention Officer Review Committee. Successful candidates will then proceed to the Polygraph Exam. An indication of deception on the polygraph will remove a candidate from consideration in this process. 3. Upon completion of the background investigation, the Detention Officer Review Committee will review all available information and will recommend the most highly qualified candidates for the employment interview by the Detention Facilities. 4. Those candidates given a conditional employment offer will then undergo a complete medical examination and a psychological evaluation. A County appointed physician will assess the candidate's physical fitness to determine their ability to perform the essential functions of the position. A licensed mental health care professional shall perform an examination to assess the candidate's emotional and mental fitness in performing the essential functions of the position. 5. Reason(s) for disqualification of candidates may include, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: poor work history, poor driving record, felony conviction, falsification of application or other documents, failure to meet physical standards, indication of deception on the polygraph, inability to competitively complete any of the component parts of the selection process, or any other disqualifying causes determined by the Detention Center and/or the Office of Personnel. 6. ONCE THE CANDIDATES HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE ENTIRE SELECTION PROCESS AND ARE HIRED, THEY WILL BE REQUIRED, WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF EMPLOYMENT, TO ATTEND THE MARYLAND POLICE AND CORRECTIONAL TRAINING ACADEMY FOR THE SPECIFIED TRAINING PERIOD.
